Having Fun with Flickr

For Discovery Exercise #6, we are supposed to learn how to have More Flickr Fun. My husband and I took a cruise on the Carnival Miracle in February, 2007 (over a year and a half ago, boo), and I had some pictures posted on Flickr from our trip. I decided to try one of the tools over at Big Huge Labs to make a cool mosaic from some of my favorite pictures from the trip. I was a little surprised at how easy it was to do. I had seen other websites with mosaics like this posted, but I never knew how the people made them. Well, now I know. And I have a feeling that once the baby is born, I will be making more mosaics of cute baby pictures instead! In the meantime, enjoy this mosaic from my cruise vacation. And don't make fun of me for wearing a life preserver! I don't know how to swim!

Potluck food at the Library

Potluck food
Originally uploaded by PurrBox
On August 15th, the staff at my branch held a beautiful baby shower for me, my husband, and my soon-to-be-born son, Doug. It was a wonderful party, and I got to see some old friends from places I used to work, too. Everyone brought food for the shower, and it was so yummy, I could hardly decide what to eat.

As a part of Learn & Play, we are supposed to blog about a picture that we took at the library. I am lucky that I am able to include some pictures of the wonderful celebration that we had. I feel very loved.

Blog Title

It took me a long time to figure out what to call my blog. I couldn't come up with anything creative. I was beginning to get frustrated. Then, when I was out on the floor, I had a child summon me by calling out "Hey, Library Lady" and I realized--that was the perfect title for my blog. I am a Library Lady--a kind of Jack of all trades, and master of some (I hope!)

7 1/2 Habits of Highly Successful Lifelong Learners

The video 7 1/2 Habits of Highly Successful Lifelong Learners gave me a lot to think about. for this exercise, we are supposed to pick out the easiest and hardest habits for ourselves. However, I think there are other lifelong learning habits that aren't on this list that I need to think about.

As far as the list goes, I think the easiest habit for me is either Habit 4 (Have confidence in yourself as a competent, effective learner) or Habit 7 (Teach/Mentor others). I really can't decide between the two of them. Habit 4 is easy for me because I have always loved learning, and I am good at it. I feel like there is little I can't learn if I really put my mind to it. That is part of the reason I love working for the library--anything I could ever want to learn about is here somewhere, whether it is in a book or on the web. Habit 7 is also easy for me because I love to teach people what I know. I am a basic source trainer, which allows me to share some of my knowledge and insights with other staff. I also love showing customers how our website works and how they can find information for themselves.

The hardest habit for me is probably Habit 1 (Begin with the end in mind). Because I love to learn things, I often have multiple projects on my plate at the same time. It is hard to set goals and track progress, because I often don't have a specific goal in mind. I often learn enough about something to satisfy my curiosity about it--but then I drop what I was working on because I found something else that I want to learn about. Consequently, I have an awful lot of half-done projects around my house.

For me, though, there are other learning habits not addressed here that I think are just as important. Curiosity is one of the most important characteristics that life-long learners have. If you are not curious, you won't be motivated to learn. You might be able to memorize how to do something, but if you are not curious about it yourself, it won't stick with you after you are finished with the activity. Lifelong learners learn about things that are interesting to themselves, without worrying if someone else is interested in the same thing that they are.

A little bummed....

I found out about the "23 things" last year when I was at ALA. I thought it sounded like such a great way to motivate people to learn about the amazing tools on the web with little pressure. I also loved the collaborative effort of the whole concept. I'm a little bummed, though--I had been looking forward to doing the "23 things" ever since I found out that CML hired Helene Blowers--and I will be on maternity leave for over half the initiative! CML changed the name to Learn and Play, which makes it sound like we are allowed to have fun at work. Nice. I plan to do as many of the exercises as I can before I go on leave. It's not too hard to sit at a computer at 9 months pregnant. Sure is easier than helping customers find books that inevitably are on the bottom shelf!

And since this is my first blog post, I wanted to try to insert a picture. It seems like every cat owner who has a blog always posts pictures of the cats, so here I go. This is Pearl, getting in the way when I was trying to fold the sheets.

Cute, isn't she?
